DMTF Continues to Break New Ground in 2011

2011 has been another great year for DMTF. We have produced many new specifications, over a dozen new profiles and four major new releases of CIM.  Our work in the Cloud Computing space is really kicking into to gear with several Work-In-Progress (WIP) releases of our new Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface (CIMI) specification, along with the first whitepaper also released as a WIP from the Software License Management Incubator. In addition, the Cloud Auditing Data Federation Working Group (CADFWG) has been hard at work and we should see some of their new specifications announced in early 2012.

If all of that wasn’t enough, DMTF achieved a number of “firsts” this year as an organization. We had our first two specifications, OVF and SM-CLP, recognized by ISO/IEC as international standards.  In addition, DMTF has been recognized as a publically available specification (PAS) submitter by ISO/IEC JTC1. This allows us to submit our specs directly to ISO/IEC, which we have already begun to do with WS-Man.  These recognitions and acceptance of our specifications by the international community raises our status as a truly global organization with members from around the world. Also, we hosted a cloud summit at our Alliance Partner Technical Summit earlier this year in Boulder, CO. This event served as a platform to provide input to the ISO SC38 cloud study group with representatives from around the globe.

Launching our first regional subcommittee in Japan was another major milestone in establishing our global presence. The group’s initial focus is to localize DMTF materials and to grow awareness of DMTF in Japan. To help make this a reality, we also developed our first localized website portal, which is available at http://dmtf.org/jp.  We hope this will serve as a model for other regional groups that we may launch in the future.

Our conformance program is now in full swing with the DASH conformance program reaching the milestone of more than 50 products earlier this year. Our interoperability programs continue to be significant in ensuring that our standards provide the compatibility customers require between various product implementations.

Another first for the DMTF this year is the appointment of the new VP of Education. Our membership survey has consistently reported that education is a big priority for the organization and we are very pleased with this new role. Stay tuned as we expect to see several new programs roll out in 2012.

There were so many great accomplishments and activities this year including improved processes from the process and incubator committee, participation in many shows and events, with support from our marketing committee, as well as another great academic event, SVM’11 in Paris, France driven by our alliance committee.  I continue to be amazed at all we do together and how much progress we make in 12 months. I think this year has been an amazing year due to all of your hard work and dedication to making IT management more manageable in an interoperable way. Thank you and I look forward to working with all of you in 2012.
